Kansas is a difficult state for Democrats running statewide. That is exactly why candidate quality matters. The Democratic nominee will need to appeal beyond the party’s natural base, speak credibly to unaffiliated voters, and offer Kansans something more serious than a standard national Democratic campaign.
Adam Hamilton appears best suited to that task.
Hamilton is not a conventional political figure. That is part of his appeal. As the longtime pastor of a large Kansas church, he has built a public life around persuasion, moral seriousness, institutional leadership, and the ability to speak to people who do not all start from the same political assumptions. That matters in Kansas.
CIVPAC does not endorse candidates because they are outsiders. Outsider status is not a qualification. But Hamilton’s candidacy is unusual in a way that could be useful. He has a public identity that is not simply partisan. He has spent years speaking to Kansans across ideological and cultural lines. In a state where Democrats cannot win by appealing only to Democrats, that kind of cross-pressure experience is important.
Senator Roger Marshall has aligned himself closely with Donald Trump and the national MAGA movement. CIVPAC believes Kansas deserves a stronger alternative: one grounded in constitutional seriousness, public decency, respect for democratic institutions, and practical attention to the needs of Kansas families.
Hamilton is not a perfect candidate. No candidate is. His lack of prior elective office is a real consideration. So is the fact that voters will need to learn more about his positions as the campaign develops. But in a crowded Democratic primary, CIVPAC believes he offers the clearest path toward a serious statewide challenge to Marshall.
Kansas Democrats should be looking for a nominee who can speak to Democrats, unaffiliated voters, moderate Republicans, faith communities, suburban voters, rural voters tired of national political theater, and Kansans who want a senator more interested in governing than in partisan performance.
Hamilton appears to be that candidate.
CIVPAC’s endorsement is not based on wishful thinking. Kansas has not elected a Democrat to the United States Senate in a very long time. This will be a hard race no matter who wins the Democratic primary. But hard races are not excuses for nominating candidates who cannot build a broad coalition. They are reasons to nominate candidates who can.
Adam Hamilton gives Kansas Democrats their best chance to make the race about character, competence, institutional seriousness, and the practical needs of Kansas rather than about national party labels alone.
