Centrist Independent Voter endorses Senator Jack Reed in Rhode Island’s September 9 Democratic primary for the United States Senate.
Reed is a long-serving senator with an unusually deep background in national security and defense. A West Point graduate and former Army officer, he is now the ranking Democrat on the Senate Armed Services Committee. His experience and institutional seriousness are particularly valuable at a time when American foreign policy faces challenges from Russia, China and instability in the Middle East.
His support for Ukraine’s resistance to Russian aggression is especially important to Centrist Independent Voter. Reed has continued to press for stronger sanctions against Russia and has supported bipartisan efforts to target the energy revenues that finance Vladimir Putin’s war.
Reed also understands that support for American strength abroad does not require supporting every use of military force. He has criticized unauthorized and poorly conceived military interventions while emphasizing deterrence against Russia and China and Congress’s constitutional responsibility for decisions involving war.
On economic policy, Reed has been particularly clear about tariffs. He describes broad tariffs as taxes paid by American consumers and businesses and has supported bipartisan efforts to constrain presidential tariff authority.
Reed has also demonstrated a willingness to work across party lines on practical legislation. He recently joined Republican Senator Mike Crapo in leading legislation to prevent disability benefits from unfairly disqualifying veterans from certain federal housing programs. Bipartisanship is not valuable merely as a label, but it matters when it produces workable legislation.
Reed faces two challengers.
Connor Burbridge offers voters a much more left-wing platform that includes ending military aid to Israel, abolishing ICE, Medicare for All and even “taxing billionaires out of existence.” Those positions put him far from the Centrist Independent Voter on foreign policy, immigration and economic policy.
Luis Daniel Muñoz, a physician and former gubernatorial candidate, emphasizes healthcare, housing, wages and climate resilience, but has not provided enough detail to demonstrate that his approach to these issues would be effective or produce benefits commensurate with their costs, much less that Rhode Island would benefit from replacing Reed’s extensive experience and national-security leadership.
The Choice
Jack Reed will not agree with Centrist Independent Voter on every issue. But he combines national-security expertise, strong support for Ukraine, skepticism toward economically damaging tariffs and a demonstrated ability to work with members of both parties.
Those qualities are worth preserving in the Senate.
