John Stuart Mill was a smart man. He was arguably one of the founders of several academic disciplines. But is he right in his fondness for the middle?
I often hear progressives proclaim that their enemy is not the right but the center. They seem really angry that people who think of themselves as reasonable are not on their (the progressive) side.
If you work your way through the Centrist Independent Voter website you will find that many, maybe most, of the policy positions do seek to carve out a middle path. But this is not always the case. We lean toward the right on fiscal and economic issues, we lean toward the left on social issues. When economic and social issues overlap, such as education and health care, we are very close to what we view as the center.
